Apex Legends' Specialized Traversal Techniques Become Widely Accessible During This Update

The game developers has a special treat in store for the popular battle royale gamers, perfectly timed for the holidays. Fans of the battle royale's highly fluid traversal will be pleased to learn that an innovative traversal feature will be introduced when Season 27: Amped goes live on November 4th.

Introducing The Mantle Boost

Named "Momentum Boosting" by the developers, this feature gives players a burst of forward momentum when climbing over ledges and walls. According to lead battle royale designer Eric Canavese, Mantle Boosting has unofficially existed of Apex Legends for some time, often called as "mantle jumping." But it's challenging for the average player, and typically employed by competitive players in competitive play or tournaments. In this update, the team simplifies the process for everyone to execute these advanced speed-boosts.

"Mantle Boosts existed in the game for some time, but the movement isn't easy to perform and a player might not realize it [is in the game] without outside knowledge," Canavese explains. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so players can clearly identify the timing to activate the high-octane traversal skill, opening up the feature and introducing fresh strategies to play for a much wider base."

Why Make It Accessible

Why make a previously obscure technique accessible to everyone? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan says the team aims for gamers to experience empowerment — including ones who are inexperienced.

"Our community is doing other crazy stuff like super-glides and tap-strafes, and we examined at our competition, looked at what our players execute, and we said, 'How can we extend these capabilities to a broader audience?'" Mohan clarifies. "Because currently, certain techniques are kind of janky to use — it requires to change controls and hit precise timings. So we said, 'How about we create a more official implementation?'"

Season 27 Movement Focus

Mobility is largely the central theme in Season 27, with characters the gravity mage, the defensive specialist, and Valkyrie receiving enhancements to maintain them mobile. Recovery time on her tactical ability has been decreased, and the Gravity Lift will boost users upward faster than it used to. Rampart's Amped Cover now include a roof and the ability to grant speed boosts to allies in range. However it's aerial this Legend who's getting the most attention this season, with various adjustments implemented to enhance her as more potent, faster, and deadlier.

"I think many agree that Valkyrie's time is here," says Legend designer Ian Holstead. "There's no doubt that she's been dominant previously, but with the introduction of other characters, movement[-based] passives, and redeployment tools, it felt like she's not very relevant in current Apex. It was an ideal chance for the team to reexamine a bunch of aspects [of her kit] and sort of bring her back to her glory days."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To restore her competitive status in current strategies, Holstead says the team assessed each of her abilities and introduced some powerful modifications. Her VTOL Jets received improvements, increasing her speed while airborne, and this equipment now recharge three times faster, allowing her to remain longer in the air. Now she won't take damage from her own Missile Swarm, which was enhanced to tag enemies who are hit from the missiles. Her squad redeploy skill — which launches teammates into the air for repositioning or escape — now takes reduced delay to fire up. She's also getting some new Legend Upgrades that users can select to conserve resources, widen the area of her Missile Swarm, or accelerate her Skyward Dive takeoff time.

"Her jet pack fulfills the pilot experience," Holstead says.

Olympus Improvements

Even the game's lone airborne map, Olympus, is getting a movement-friendly overhaul, with an extensive redesign that opens up bottlenecks and renders securing elevated positions more manageable. The developers says Apex Legends this update is all about giving players the resources required to compete in matches.

"Essentially, we were looking at Apex's core identity as a movement shooter," explains lead Legend designer Josh Mohan.

The battle royale the Amped season launches Nov. 4 at the specified times.
