China's Figure Skaters Face Investigation After Displaying Toy Missile during Event

ISU officials are conducting an investigation following a pair of Chinese figure skaters were seen with what looked like a toy ballistic missile at a grand prix figure skating event.

Television video showed the skaters waiting alongside a sizable prop in the form of a rocket marked “DF-61” while waiting for the judges' results at the “kiss and cry” area during the event.

The DF-61 is a recently introduced Chinese-made ground-launched long-range weapon designed for transporting atomic warheads, that had been displayed during a national ceremony last month.

Officials is aware that an inappropriate soft toy appears to have been one of the objects thrown on to the ice by spectators following a performance during the competition,” the ISU stated in an emailed statement.

The item was then handled by the skaters after their performance. We apologizes for the incident and will investigate further.”

The duo placed in eighth place of 10 pairs during the ice dancing competition, with the victory going to Madison Chock and Evan Bates from the US.
