The Year 2026 Hailed as the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is called an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Frogs are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their popularity has markedly exploded in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are bona fide amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this rise, I conducted a thorough analysis into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a marked uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the broader culture is somewhat evident elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the trend in gaming appears uniquely powerful.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a wide array of innovative control schemes.

Many of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

If these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be witnessing a true frog gaming renaissance.
